Fellowship recognizes faculty member’s commitment to mentoring
Yvonne Mai ’13, ’15, PharmD, MS, BCGP, BCACP, FCSHP, associate professor of pharmacy practice and regional coordinator for Stockton, lives by two guiding principles: servant leadership and radical candor.
Dr. Mai is both a practicing pharmacist and an educator.
“This dual role has showed me the importance of building strong relationships,” said Dr. Mai. “This foundation helps you care for patients in a more effective way as well as give students sincere praise and clear criticism so they can grow.”
Her dedication to both patient care and mentoring has not gone unnoticed. This year marks a significant career milestone for Dr. Mai; she received the California Society of Health-System Pharmacists (CSHP) Practitioner Recognition Program Award and accompanying fellowship status.
By modeling a holistic approach to clinical care, Dr. Mai has transformed how doctor of pharmacy (PharmD) student Tianyi Zhang ’26 views the role of a pharmacist.
“She showed me that being a pharmacist means more than managing medications, it is also about understanding and caring for the person behind the prescriptions,” said Zhang.
Fellow student Genella Mae Alviad ’26 echoes that sentiment.
“Not only does she account for the patient’s disease states, but she also considers their social environment and lifestyle,” Alviad said. “Now, I make sure that the recommendations I make to my patients not only help them meet their goals but are also accessible.”

Zhang added, “I admire how Dr. Mai encourages and challenges students to reason through clinical concepts on their own before providing answers. She creates a supportive environment that values critical thinking and learning from mistakes. Her mentorship has pushed me to think more deeply, connect ideas and strengthen my clinical knowledge.”
Dr. Mai is actively involved in the Central Valley chapter of CSHP and has served in multiple leadership roles. One that spurred her professional growth was serving as the chapter’s treasurer. In 2021, she stepped into the role of chapter president at a time when there was a critical need for coordinated public health efforts. She helped organize mass vaccination events to administer COVID-19 vaccines in San Joaquin County. For Dr. Mai, the experience demonstrated the impact professional organizations can have on public health.
Another key piece of her leadership development journey started as a student through the Rho Pi Phi pharmacy fraternity, which she continues to stay engaged with as a faculty adviser.
An active researcher, Dr. Mai, along with PharmD student Sabrina Ton ’26, recently conducted a study at San Joaquin General Hospital which found that iron deficiency anemia was a major predictor of hospital readmission for heart failure patients.
“I hope my legacy will be measured by what my students achieve,” Dr. Mai said. “The patients they’ll advocate for, the innovations they’ll bring to pharmacy practice and, eventually, the students they’ll mentor themselves.”
